ASSISTANT TECHNICAL COORDINATOR | Deck Outfitting
Position
Permanent position based in Athlone Industria, Cape Town.
Role
Southern Wind Shipyard is looking for an enthusiastic deck outfitting specialist to support the Technical Coordinator – Deck Outfitting in the specification, ordering, installation, and finishing of exterior components on high-performance sailing yachts.
This role combines office-based coordination with hands-on follow-up on the shop floor and onboard during installation and finishing of wooden decks, windows, exterior paint, hatches, companionways, transom arrangements, and sail lockers.
Main Responsibilities
• Assist with defining technical requirements and specifications for deck outfitting items (decking, windows, hatches, companionways, transom and sail locker arrangements)
• Support ordering, delivery tracking, and quality checks of components and subcontracted services.
• Coordinate with production teams, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure correct installation and finishing of deck outfitting.
• Follow up on progress in the workshop and onboard, helping to resolve day-to-day issues with fit, finish, and functionality.
• Assist with documenting deck outfitting solutions, including drawings, manuals, and as-built records
Requirements
• Minimum 2 years’ experience working with or on large sailing yachts (superyachts or performance cruisers preferred).
• Strong passion for boats, sailing, and high-quality craftsmanship in exterior outfitting.
• Practical understanding of yacht deck layouts and exterior arrangements, including how crews use and move around the boat.
• Comfortable working closely with production teams and subcontractors in a busy shipyard environment.
• Good computer skills such as excel, outlook, etc.
• Practical knowledge of technical drawings and suppliers installation requirements.
• Good communication skills, attention to detail, and a hands-on approach.
• Ability to work under pressure and collaborate across teams.
Remuneration
Salary will be aligned with experience and industry standards.
